Research and Development:
A Proud Tradition

Building on Vitamin A
Riken Vitamin's technological roots date back to 1917, when the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, Rikagaku Kenkyusho or Riken, the first full-fledged industrial scientific research laboratory, was established in Japan. Out of the lab have come Noble laureates Dr. Hideki Yukawa and Dr. Shinichirou Tomonaga as well as such World-famous scientists Dr. Umetaro Suzuki, renowned for his discovery of Oryzanin (vitamin B1) and Dr. Katsumi Takahashi, who successfully extracted vitamin A from fish liver oil.
Riken Eiyo Yakuhin Co., ltd was established in 1938 to commercialize the achievements of the laboratory.
Thanks to the successful industrial application of the ground breaking molecular distillation process whereby tiny amounts of a substance included in a natural material can be extracted and concentrated, Riken Vitamin got its start eleven years later in 1949 when the division specializing in vitamin A became an independent organization.

The Search for Natural Materials
Since early extraction of high-quality vitamin A from fish liver oil and its subsequent successful mass production, our consistent policy has been to harmonize scientific technology with the use of natural resources. Riken Vitamin is proud of its technological leadership not only in extraction of vitamins, but also in such fields as meat extracts and extraction of natural coloring, distilled monoglycerides, processing of wakame (an edible seaweed) and beading and encapsulation of vitamins, all of which have led to many unique products.

An Eye on the Future
While firmly establishing itself as a leader in the food products industry, Riken Vitamin has kept its focus on the future, especially on the health and lifestyle-related industries which are widely expected to flourish in this century. As the demand for more natural, food products continues to grow, Riken Vitamin, with its proprietary technology and R&D expertise, has positioned itself for continuing success in the fields of food, fine chemicals and biotechnology.
